The all new ranking system Proposal Groups for 2018

New 2018 rankings system proposal:

As you have noticed, I have been hard at work to get a contact person from each school in SA. We will have this sorted out in the next few weeks;

We have a new proposal on how to rank schools in 2018.

Groups (This will still change)

Group 1: 89 schools

Group 2:  102 schools

Group 3: 162 schools

Total 353 schools and counting

It’s impossible to rank some schools above others.

Example

In the Western Cape you have A school like Wynberg playing Paarl boys; Paarl Gim; Paul Roos; Boland Landbou; Stellenberg; Durbanville; Bishops; Oakdale; SACS all in one season.

1. If they lose most of these matches,
2. currently you might have a school playing none of the top 30 schools
3. Ranked above Wynberg, which is not fair.

This seams unfair to a school with a stronger fixture list.

The strength of your opposition will now decide in which group you end up with.

If you are in group 2 no 90 to 191 Then you will be no 1 in this group but no 90 in SA.

No 3 in this group will be no 92, I hope you get the picture.

Group 3 no 1 will be no 192 in SA but no 1 in their group.

Gone are the days of being unbeaten and not playing regular strong opposition and then being ranked in the top 20.

This is the reason why no final rankings have been done this year. I think this will be fair reflection and when we have reliable sources in place from each of the schools sending us results.

The 2018 World of Rugby rankings for first XV; U/16;U/15 and U/14 rankings and the combined rankings will brake new ground next year.

This will give more schools exposure!!

Please not the groups are a proposal and not completed

  1. Desmond, please explain how Durbanville ends up in Group 1?

They had absolute horrific results against Group 1 opponents in 2017.
    DURBANVILLE 6 STELLENBERG 47
    DURBANVILLE 17 OUTENIQUA 88
    DURBANVILLE 10 RONDEBOSCH 58
    DURBANVILLE 0 SACS 100
    DURBANVILLE 14 BISHOPS 72

And to be realistic they lost against the following Tier 2 teams
    DURBANVILLE 30 WORCESTER GYM 33
    DURBANVILLE 7 BELLVILLE HIGH 13
    DURBANVILLE 24 TYGERBERG HIGH 41
    DURBANVILLE 17 BRACKENFELL 84

Surely at best this is a Tier 2 team, or do I miss something

      1. Thanks Desmond.

I am not a statistical ghuru, but you must have a massive weighting towards junior teams to overcome those results. And can you really have direct correlation between u14 and u19 results? I can show you various examples of zero correlation.

If you use junior teams surely you must also include u19B teams in this calculation?

Why do you not also use accurate, demonstrated past performances of u19A teams – 3 years or so to set this base.

I just think it is unfair to have Durbanville above Bellville, Brackenfell and even Tygerberg based on accurate, proven U19 results.

        1. Just a final point

The Durbanville junior teams are the benificiaries of your ‘weak fixture’ problem that you want to fix.

They only played against a max of 4 top 20 teams (never against the real tier 1 teams) and the did not win all of the games. But the rest of the fixtures are weak, so they end up too high on the rankings.

For ex. Durbanville u16 only played against 3 top 20 teams.(Outeniqua, Stellenberg,Rondebosch). They lost all 3 games and are still no.12 I think. They had to benefit substantially from the ‘weak fixture’ list problem and position seems to high.
